F.R. David launch with Will Holder and Chris Mann & D.S. al Coda release

Artists Space NY
Sun, 03/11/2012 - 4:00pm

F.R.DAVID is published by de Appel, Amsterdam, and is concerned with the position of reading and writing in the arts.
"This is not new, of course", the ninth issue of F.R.DAVID, finds 'poetry' – the word and the product – NOT sacred, IS mutable, and SHOULD be replaced with "politics", "art", "baking", "film" and "cabinet-making" as one possible means to record life.
Edited by Will Holder, with contributions by Stan Brakhage, Adam Chodzko, Cid Corman, Maya Deren, Robert Duncan, Anja Kirschner / David Panos, Hilary Koob Sassen, Jackson Mac Low, Chris Mann, Charles Olson, Marjorie Perloff, C.H. Sisson, H.G. Widdowson and more

Bicameral Research Sound & Projection System

The Clocktower Gallery NYC
Wed, 01/11/2012 - 6:00pm

I'll be playing on Wednesday night from 6-8pm at the Clocktower as part of David Linton's ongoing installation. If you haven't already been and experienced it, please come! Long beautiful drones and 4 part cello harmonies to be expected.

With his Bicameral Research Sound & Projection System Linton aims to make vibrational wave induced perceptual energy states manifest by deploying interconnected measures of electric sound & pulsing light in live action with hand manipulated objects in physical (live camera) space. He employs an integrated recursive audio & video feedback system of his own perversely simple design modulated by freehand intervention to deliver vigorous eye, ear, and - sometimes - body shaking realtime audio

David Linton's Bicameral Research Sound & Projection System sound and video installation entitled Cortical Degausser opens for public viewing on Wed Dec 7, 2011 in Studio 4 at the Clocktower Gallery on the 13th floor of 108 Leonard St in downtown Manhattan.

Viewing hours will be from 1:00 to 7:00 PM Monday through Friday and by special weekend appointment through the month until Dec 30th.

perfect after-lives

I took myself well off the radar after finishing the first part of the process of getting VIDAS PERFECTAS on the stage. It took everything out of all of us that were involved. After catching up on rest the demons arrived to remind me that this was only the beginning of the process and that 2012 is a big year for not only the opera, but it is by necessity (the end of my stipend) the year I finish the PhD.

There are so many other things happening: The Tiger's Mind will have it's final meeting in Paris in February and we will work on the final chapter of the book and also begin work on the film we are making. I also plan to finish the writing for the book that Will Holder and I are making together. And on top of that, there are some amazing new releases coming up on DS al Coda and a new series of events and dinners that I'll be organizing in the city.

Another new thing to look forward to is teaching this summer up at the Bard MFA program. I've been up there off and on over the last years to hang out with all my talented colleagues and admire the program from a distance, and now finally I will take part in it. I am very excited!

Performing Zones d'Accord by Keeril Maken

Keeril Makan's Zones d'accord is performed by cellist Alex Waterman. These excerpts are taken from the CD release concert of Keeril's Target CD (Starkland) presented and filmed at the New York's Issue Project Room on Sep. 9, 2011.

Reviewing the CD at Sequenza21, Jay Batzner comments, "The virtuosity of Waterman's right hand is truly stunning... [and he] draws out Makan's ecstatic emotional arc throughout the performance."

A Ballad of Accounting

Bring to Light Nuit Blanche New York 2011
Sat, 10/01/2011 - 7:15pm

A Ballad of Accounting

Titled after a folk song by Ewan McColl and Peggy Seeger, this 40 minute film documents Alex Waterman’s attempt at filtering out the noise of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway with his cello. Divided into 12 parts, charting 4 times of day and 12 different locations. The film follows Waterman as he tries to harmonize and filter the highway, taking on the leviathan structure with insufficient instrumental means. The result is an incredible ‘tuning’ of the broken road: the BQE is swallowed up by the cello and finally reduced to a distant oceanic roar with delicate harmonics riding its crest.
